How to Update Your UK Passport
After a Name Change
Once you have received your Prime Deed Poll, your first priority is likely updating your UK Passport. As the "Gold Standard" of identity documents, an updated passport makes changing your name with banks and the DVLA significantly smoother.
The Golden Rule of Travel
You cannot travel if the name on your flight ticket does not match the name in your passport. If you have a holiday booked in your old name, we strongly recommend waiting until you return before applying for your new passport.
1. Apply for a 'Renewal', Not a 'Replacement'
This is the most common mistake. Even though you are changing your details, the HM Passport Office (HMPO) treats this as a standard renewal. You can apply online via Gov.uk or use the "Check & Send" service at your local Post Office.
2. Prepare Your Evidence
HMPO will not accept photocopies or digital scans. You must send your original physical Deed Poll. Since Prime Deed Polls are printed on 120gsm archival parchment, they meet the strict requirements for government scanning and archival.
- Your current UK Passport
- Your signed and witnessed Prime Deed Poll
- Two new passport-sized photographs
3. Mailing Your Documents Safely
Given the importance of your Deed Poll and old passport, never send them via standard First Class mail. Always use Royal Mail Special Delivery (Guaranteed). This provides insurance and tracking, ensuring your legal identity remains secure.
